Gushing!!

I have to gush for just a second, My heart is so full! I'm amazing again by God's faithfulness and response to my simple faith. Everyday is an adventure as we lean into Him. We are standing on the edge of a cliff-again- and we put one foot out and a rock appears, then the next foot and another rock. We are in such a tight place but God is showing up daily meeting each need.

(My life quote-"When you get to the end of all the light you know and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly."- Edward Teller)

Now that I begin to write I think of what we have been through in the last 9 months or so...I have been stretched, overwhelmed at times, exhausted most of the time and pressed but in my best moments I have been choosing to believe in His promises and not let defeat take hold!
I was feeling a bit sorry for myself the other day (maybe a lot sorry) and thinking about how if we had stayed in Hawaii with Aaron working in Hilo we would be in such a different place financially right now. Then I remembered the Israelites and how they looked back at Egypt wishing to go back to slavery because it was comfortable. (Exodus 16:3)

That may sound extreme but we had become slaves to work, our time was not our own-especially Aaron. (He was working 6-7 days a week and driving 4 hours PER day on top of a 9-12 hour work day. I wasn't sitting idle waiting for him to come home either.) And yet we have both said maybe we should have stayed a little longer...(Egypt)

So God reminded me of how they looked back at Egypt reminiscing their "good life" and how stuck it made them. They experienced incredible miracles day after day and yet most of them never arrived at their Dream Land because they couldn't embrace where they were at and they didn't want to fight for where they were going. I have been making choices-

  • to LIVE where I am...I have to learn this because I have been temporary for so long
  • to continue to respond to the desires of my heart in Faith that God put them there
  • and to trust, trust, trust so that we don't stay living in our own strength and abilities
  •  To believe in His goodness, His faithfulness, His undying love for me.
  • I choose to look for the water coming out of the rock and be thankful when it does. (Psalm 78:12-15)

And now I gush!!! Because we get to see water come out of a rock and the sun between the clouds and we get to absolutely delight in HIS faithfulness!!!! We may be in the middle of a wilderness but that is where we see so clearly the way he treasures us, provides for us, and listens to our desires.

The Wilderness and desert will SING joyously
Like the flowers in spring BURSTING into blossom,

a symphony of song and color.
God's resplendent glory, fully on display

God awesome, God majestic.

ENERGIZE the limp hands, STRENGTHEN the rubbery knees.
Tell fearful souls,
“Courage! Take heart! God is here, right here!
On His way to put things right and redress all wrongs.
He’s on his way! He’ll save you!”

Blind eyes will be opened,
Deaf ears unstopped, Lame men and women will dance,
the voiceless break into song.
Springs of water will burst out in the wilderness, streams flow in the desert.
Hot sands will become a cool oasis, thirsty ground a bubbling brooke.

Let Go

When I started painting "Let Go", I knew that it represented change, a leap of faith and a step into the unknown. What I didn't realize fully was how significant it would be for me personally. I made this painting specifically for the Abundant Life annual conference "Limitless" (http://alifefamily.com/limitless2012/conference-2012/)

I painted by inspiration from Hawaii while the conference took place in Washington state. I knew this painting was a message to me as well, but honestly I thought I was good to go.
I knew change was in the wind for Aaron and I, but at that point no decisions had been made and I just had a strong sense of stepping off a cliff. It goes right along with my favorite quote ...

“When you get to the end of all the light you know and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly.”
― Edward Teller

Since then we have decided to move back to Washington to have our first baby, due in January. Although moving back sounds like going into the familiar it is A LOT of letting go and still many unknowns. I am always up for adventure and Aaron is usually encouraging me to "return to reality" with all my fabulous plans, haha :)
However this transition has been harder than anticipated. We are selling our condo which has been our home for almost 3 years & getting rid of almost everything we own. It means giving up my art room which I have only had for a couple months. Leaving best friends. All only weeks before welcoming our little boy to the world. I honestly thought all that was really not that big of a deal until I was right in the middle of it.
This painting has turned into a message to myself and a true sign post for me encouraging me that we are heading the right way. As I have been packing boxes, filling the give away pile and prepping our condo for the sale, I have pictured this painting and remembered that this is the season of Letting go and pressing into the future to grab onto the next path of destiny. This is the time to hold nothing back, to live with abandon and to remember that everything we let go of gives us more room to grab onto the new thing knowing that it will be bigger better and more beautiful than we can imagine.

One giant leap

Well here I am at the Kona airport, on Valentine's day, alone. Not to worry, my husband sent me off on my trip with an incredible day of adventures yesterday.
This is my very first vacation apart from him and our longest time apart since being married. Not only that, it is only my second time traveling alone. One small step for most people, one giant leap for Amani. :)
This past year has been an incredible journey of growth for me from art school to new job, new schedule, new all sorts of things. The growth always includes some growing pains, but it is always worth it on the other side.
I'm telling myself that as I sit here missing my hubby and it's only been 12 hours. Good thing I have such awesome people waiting for me on the other side of the ocean :)
Vegas here I come! (destination is mainly Utah but Vegas is in the mix too)

New Beginnings

It has been a whirlwind ever since my brother moved away a month ago -has it really only been a month?!! I have been sensing ever since April that something significant was going to happen at the beginning of July. I wasn't too happy when I found out it involved my little bro and Anna moving away :( But I knew there had to be something good coming. And there was, so many opportunities! I have been doing so many different things that are all right up my ally.
The after day he left I got a job painting houses, which of course I love. I have definitely had the chance to do some painting of my own in the past and always enjoyed it, now getting paid for it is even better. I love not working in a box (a store). I love having a project that you have visible results and an end date.  And of course I love being in houses. Even if I'm not picking the paint color or adding decorations, just the process of being involved in a transformation is fabulous. (And I got a few weeks off while my boss is away ;)
I also am teaching a couple times a week, which is fun and rewarding. I teach drawing to a group of kids between 7-12 and I  paint with Clint, who uses art to overcome his disabilities. (http://clintdoyle.com/) It is great to be able to pass on some of my love of art and see their faces when they make something they couldn't before.

I have been able to spend plenty of time on the computer as well as I worked on the T shirts for our church's Focus conference. I am on the creative arts team for it so there has been lots of brainstorming and I am just getting started on the stage design! As of today we should have a venue so it'll be exciting to see what we can do in a short time.

And last but not least, my favorite project of all- my first (paid) design job!!! Through a local business networking group I met a lady that needed some help on her condo. I did a consultation, picked colors and gave her a new furniture arrangement that she loves. (Photos to come when the paint dries :))

It has been a busy but fun time for me! All these things that I love to do are all happening at the same time and it is so wonderful to move into a new season in my life where I get to use my gifts and explore my passions and continue learning about myself. I am about to register my business as a visual artist and plan on working towards my dream of a non-profit in the next few months. I kinda feel like a baby just getting their feet under them, every little step feels like a big one but it is really rewarding. :)

Resume vs. photo album

I had a bit of an epiphany as I was driving along a couple days ago. I realized that I have been viewing the course of my life as if it were a resume. I have been listing my accomplishments and always coming up short. I have never had what I would consider a career job and have only had one job (at the furniture store) that I even liked very much. Therefore I wasn't feeling "accomplished." I really like to accomplish things. I love projects, and I love for everyday to look like I have done something. That means in the mundane, meaningless times, I have to work really hard to stay positive.
I think that if the opportunities had opened up that I thought I wanted, I would ended up working in a job that might sound like what I want but not really be it. I thought I wanted to be the buyer for the furniture store and I know there are things that I could really enjoy about it, but there are a lot of things that just aren't me. It took me a long time to realize that. (much longer than my husband) I think one reason is I felt the need to go with the more defined route of a "real" job and because I didn't know what it felt like to be in an environment that suited me.
My epiphany came because the buyer position sort of opened up and I sort of missed it and I realized that I didn't miss it at all and that wasn't really what I wanted anyway. And I'm not saying that to make myself feel better. Now that I have had a taste of things I love-art school, teaching art, freelance work, painting houses...I am finally getting to live in the environment I always wanted.
I realize that I have to stop looking at my life like a resume. I am not out to find the perfect job. I am an artist, I will create as I go and the more tools I have in my belt, the better the end result.
I decided in that moment that I want to look at my life like a photo album. I want to remember all those really cool things that make up my life whether it be related to a job or not. I want to remember my experiences and my projects. I want to see my life in pictures, not titles.

Speak Freely

I just finished the book, Permission to Speak Freely, by Anne Jackson. It is real, honest, and transparent. I read the whole thing in less than 3 hours.

We all desire to be open, to be seen, to be known, but how often to we give each other the permission to speak freely. And how often do we take that leap ourselves?

It is funny this book showed up now. Aaron and I have been talking a lot lately about the things that we seem to cover up pretty well in church. The things that no one really wants to talk about. Even though we know we are to be the open door, always accepting, always loving, most of us at some point or another, or on one topic or another, struggle with judgment against others, or most likely against ourselves. We don’t like to be uncomfortable which honestly commonly is. We seem scared of the truth of what people are going through. Why? Maybe because it makes it more real. Maybe because it means we don’t have all the answers we thought we did. Or maybe because it strikes a cord too close to our own struggles.

“I realize fear isn’t only affecting me, but humanity as well. As I look around today, I see him hooking into many people I encounter. Their hearts are fighting for their dreams, yet fear claws away at their spirits, telling them their dreams are impossible. These people want to have a family, go back to school, quit their jobs and move to Africa, ask that girl out, volunteer at a shelter, stand up for justice, pose a question, right a wrong, or say hi to their neighbor, but Fear soaks into their bloodstream like a paralyzing virus and prevents them from taking a step in the beautiful, wonderful, difficult life in front of them, Fear wants to stop our stories. And with the pain and brokenness and hurt in this world, we simply can’t let it. The human race needs a hope and faith and light now more than ever.” Anne Jackson, Permission to Speak Freely.

I have to be honest, of course there are things I struggle with that I don’t want to talk about. We all have the desire to be seen as strong and put together. And probably a lot of times we think we are. I know I do. That is why my world is shaking once again. I am seeing myself for who I am and I don’t like some of it.

In the book Anne talks about the Gift of Going Second. When we are open and share our struggles, hurt & pain with someone, we give them a gift. We give them the gift of going second. We give them the gift of knowing that they aren’t alone and that there is someone to walk through it with them. It is a precious gift that brings hope, it brings power, it brings strength.

“Admission is just sharing something that is wrong so you can get it off your chest. Confession on the other hand is the beginning of transformation.”

I couldn’t write this with integrity without including some of my own confessions. I am in a limbo season right now where everything seems wide open. Where I am looking at life and trying to figure out where I want it to go. I am standing in a desert with nothing but shrubs around me wondering how I am going to build my Swiss Family Robinson tree house. I am at the place of accountability where you look at what is in your hand and ask “what am I going to do with it?” And all my fears come to the surface.

Fear of dreams not coming true. Fear of dreams coming true. Fear of making decisions and commitments. Fear of knowing that if I don’t then I guarantee my ineffectiveness yet not knowing if I have what it takes. Fear of discovering that who I am is not who I what to be and that the perfect image of what I want is unattainable. That the window that separates me and that girl is made from bullet proof glass. I am a dreamer and a visionary and I fear that it is all in vain and that God shouldn’t have bothered giving my all these thoughts because I wont do anything anyway.

That is the honest truth. Fortunately I am a fighter. I wont live with that. I know that all those fears are lies because I truly am made for something special. Now, the painful process of moving that truth from my head to my heart.

I am ready to rip off the door of that dark closet.

The one that seeps ribbons of fear through my mind.

The one that threatens me by its very presence

It is full of fear like a black oozing mess, waiting to burst open and soil everything

To expose me for the imperfect person I am

To stain my heart all over again

But I wont let it

It is a lie. The door is a lie. The room is a lie.

There is nothing hidden from God.

I will rip it off its hinges! Expose it!

What is there? Nothing. Nothing but a silent, dusty, empty room.

Light spills in and the sun rays sparkle as they trickle through the musty air.

Just a room

A room waiting for color. For love. For company.

It is a lonely place, hidden here alone. Not anymore.

I am hear. Claiming it. Facing it.

Choosing it as part of me. Accepting it.

I’m ready to live, to fill, to be free.

School of Illustration Week 1 & 2

Where to start? Even though I have only completed 2 weeks of school I feel like I have been doing this for a month! There is a huge amount of work packed into each week. Last week was introduction to drawing.
We did lots of different things, but the main project for the week was looking at 10 different conflicts an artist encounters. We each picked a number out of a hat and had the assignment of illustrating the 2 conflicting topics. Mine was perfectionism vs. grace. This is definitely one of my biggest struggles. I have expectations for myself that create so much pressure that I forget to enjoy the process. One of the most significant times I noticed this was when I did a 6 week dance seminar. I wanted desperately to do a good job and become an amazing dancer, so I put so much pressure on myself that I was striving and scowling most of the time. I chose the picture of the ballerina because it illustrates that season in my life, and many other times where there is the conflict of perfectionism vs. freedom to dance.

The second drawing is of finger painting. With finger painting the goal is not to create a masterpiece. It is the process. It is getting your hands dirty and just plain having fun (notice what the paint splotches say)
After these drawings where complete we had the assignment of drawing an animal using color pencil. I have never really used color pencils outside of a coloring book, so this was a challenge. I had to learn the techniques as I went and try to apply my "fun" lesson. It took many hours before I got the "fun" stage in this one. I went from, "hmmm I think I will need to invest in a larger set of pencils"... to "I never want to use these again!" to...."I guess a few more pencils would be a good thing"....

That was all week 1! I learned so much I can't put it all down, it was a growth experience to say the least. I learned how people (like my husband) can spend 50+ hours at their jobs and still feel like there is more to do. When you are passionate about something there is no end to the work to be done!

Week 2:

Oh my gosh, let's just say I have not been so happy to reach Friday in a long time! That sounds terrible, but it was extremely challenging for me. It was so strange because it was almost all internal. We had a guest speaker whose goal for the week was to break us out of the mold that we have been conditioned into living in. That doesn't happen easily, or delicately. He was an aggressive personality, which was challenging in and of itself. I was right back to my perfectionism habit, trying to create a masterpiece out of finger painting! That is frustrating! LOL.

He had us do all kinds of things, always asking why not? Why can't an apple be blue? Why does it have to be round? How 'bout square? The first couple days I was having a major internal struggle, hating everything I was doing, comparing myself to others...never a good thing...and totally missing the point. Finally I through my hands up in the air (metaphorically) and said forget it, I'm just gonna do what I want and stop trying. (That was the point all along.) Finally I started making things that he looked at and said "That's fun!"

BINGO! By the end of the week when I looked back through my pieces I discovered there where way more things I liked than I thought. Even though the comparing was bad, I used it to drive me to a new level. I asked myself what do I like about that, how can I make mine more like that. It is so funny, because comparing usually goes two ways. As I sit there thinking I love how bold that is! They are looking at mine thinking I love how delicate that is. Iron sharpening Iron. I learned a lot about not only getting out of the box, taking risks, critical thinking, but also developing my own personal style.

After all week of breaking all the rules, our final assignment was to pick a piece and make a perfect rendering of it. I dug in my heels big time! I did NOT want to do this. I was having a hard time making pictures look good withOUT rules. How was I gonna do it with them? I again had to decide I will do the best I can and enjoy it rather than freaking out about it. (That was after 2 days of freaking out.) I finally picked something and got to work. This cup represents me being poured out, and spreading life, color and FUN! through the world. :) (Along with the "perfect" picture, we were also asked to make a graphic that compliments the object=the water.)

Apparently I am not the only one struggling with these things. One of the artists I admire wrote her blog about this very thing.
"I believe I just had to acknowledge that while self-criticism is important for developing excellent work, perfectionism can become paralyzing when it creeps in...and also that any one painting cannot represent the depth and breadth of an entire body of work. A painting is simply a moment in the course of a long journey. With these thoughts, I was able to loosen up, enjoy painting and feel my faith in the process return. "

For such a time as this

This year is quickly coming to a close and is bringing with it exciting changes! In January I will be attending the University of the Nations, School of Illustration!! I have officially recieved my acceptance letter which makes it all the more real. I have been holding my breath waiting for the news. No more waiting though! My last day at work will be Dec 31st. Yikes!!! I have mixed emotions, excitement being the most prominant one, but there is also a bit of apprehension mixed in as well. Just a hint. New experiences always have a bit of that. But I have the distinct feeling I am walking into destiny.
I don't know why it is now, after four years of waiting and wishing and hoping. But it is finally time. In 2007 when we first moved to Hawaii I attended the World of Dance seminar at the UofN. It was 5 weeks of intense dance training. Along with that though was the question, what are you called to. Whatever it is do it and do it with all your heart. I knew distinctly that I am made to be an artist. I live to create and to express through every medium possible. I have been struggling to understand what that means for me and how I fit into a society (or more likely my own expectations) of security and longevity, responsibility. I have come to the understanding that it is essential for me to live outside the boundaries of convention. To explore uncharted territory and make life up as I go. I have the opportunity to impact the world through creativity and I intend to use every way possible to do that. This will be one of my biggest steps so far in making sure that happens.
Lately, I have been going through a few different passion assessments with my church leadership. What really stands out to me is something I have realized before and am recognizing again... your dreams, your destiny, your passions, they never die. They just get covered up sometimes by circumstance or expectations or reality as most people call it. I believe that each of us is born with something that just keeps coming back to us, that we always wanted to do, or be. Aaron always wanted to be a helicopter pilot, but he reasoned it away for years thinking it was too big of a dream. I always wanted to be an artist but tried to fall in love with something else more practical. We probably all have something like this. The key is to have the faith to take the step, make the changes and start living your dream.

Your heart has know the truth from inception
It echos through your soul
Courses through your veins
Lives in your dreams
Destiny awaits you.
Stop. Listen.

Breathe

Ahhhh….

I feel like I can breathe again. The last 2 months have been so intense that I didn’t know if I would ever relax again. My valiant efforts of obtaining peace in the midst of the storm were still severely lacking. I feel like I haven’t seen or talked to anyone in months-unless you were unlucky enough to be in my path. ;) I could hardly even update my facebook status!

But now, our house is done. At least all the major things. I can sit on my sofa and gaze at our handiwork. There are no ugly holes, edges, unfinished anything glaring back at me. I can use the kitchen sink for dishes and the bathroom sink for brushing my teeth instead of vise versa. I can open the fridge instead of a cooler. (granted the cooler was only for 24hrs...but still!)

Our condo is now on the market so spotlessness is mandatory and I welcome it.

With a million other things crowding my mind, I am so relived that this is no longer one of them.

Ahhhhh.....

Be still

My life has been hectic these past few weeks. My husband has been bed ridden, my one and only bathroom has been gutted (no shower, then no toilet, and no sink the whole time) and there are 5 adults living in a 2 bedroom condo.

I have been overwhelmed trying to take care of everything, keep the house in some level of livability, have food to eat, help my hubby, and work full time. I have tried over and over to remind myself that there are many people who live in a similar amount of chaos at all times (take my sister raising 5 children and her hubby working full time) I guess they build up an immunity towards the hectic-ness. I think that I generally do pretty well living in disorder- You can see what I have been living in for the last 6 months by looking at my design blog.http://becomingdesign.blogspot.com/

I guess I rely on the physical and emotional strength of my husband quite a bit, having him out of commission throws off my equilibrium. I am one half trying to make a whole.

Anyway all that to say that I have been pent up, stressed out, and scowling for a few days now. Yesterday was one of those days where everything brought tears to my eyes. But then I was reminded of where I find my strength. It isn’t by trying to juggle it all and keep moving non-stop, put your head down and plow through…it is in the stillness. It is taking the time, even just a couple minutes, to sit and center your thoughts. It is resting in peace knowing that we can’t see everything, we may not understand why, but God does, and He is bigger and better than everything we can imagine.

This process almost always requires a breaking. I was trying to do the right thing the whole time, trust God, be at peace, live in the moment, but I wasn’t succeeding. Hence the breaking, you get so pent up or worn out that you don’t have a choice but to collapse and take a breath and realize you are doing it all wrong.

In general I don’t like routine but there are some things that are important to me like having my Spark (energy drink) every morning. That is a crucial routine. There are a few others that I didn’t realize were so important though: A relaxing shower where I can sing or pray and readjust my thoughts, listening to music in the AM, and speaking out-loud good things about my life. These are the things that I have been lacking that help me keep my balance, retain my focus and remember how good life really is. These are the things that I am going to try not to forget. I am going to take the time to be still and Know that He is God.

Inspired

I should really be going to bed right now, but instead my mind is racing with possibilities. What possibilities I'm not exactly sure, they are lurking just below the realm of definite thought. My tummy is tingling with anticipation, my fingers are itching with unspent energy and I am sitting here relishing the moment. Once I feel the spurt of inspiration there is no stopping it. I think and I dream and I just have to get it out somehow. Sometimes it is to the not so awake ear of my hubby as he is trying to fall asleep at night. Sometimes it is through a fury of flying paint as I attack my canvas with passion. Sometimes it is the aimless wandering of my pen across the paper, swirly and twirly and fun. Sometimes it is furiously writing my ideas before the escape back into unconsciousness, or writing a memo to myself to remember my AHA. No matter what it is glorious and fun. It is venturing into the unknown, the unread, unseen, unthought. It is hope. It is joy. It is destiny. It is the possibility of a new tomorrow.

It is Release.

It is a Dream.

It is Passion.

It is Romance.

It is a Journey.

It is a Destination.

It is Expression.

It is Divine.
It is Inspiration.

Eat, Pray, Love

I just watched Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts (I love her) She travels to Italy to eat, India to meditate and Bali to Love. She is on a quest to find herself after realizing she has lived her life fitting in through her relationships. Naturally it got me thinking about Life & Love. (and Spaghetti )
I think a lot of people, maybe everyone at some point, live their lives trying to do it right. The right marriage, the right career, the right car, house, talent etc...We should all stop and spend some time looking at ourselves and see what is right for me?
I wondered for a second, what does this mean for me. Do I have to go off on my own and find myself? I have "always" been in a relationship (married at 18) Because of that my searching and growing has always been in perspective of another person. I never went through an independant, live on my own, stage. I went straight from my parents house to my married house (apartment). For a little while I thought that was a bad thing, I thought I missed out or that to be a strong woman meant I should be an independant one. Don't worry that though didn't last long cuz I realized- that is part of what makes me, me. I love to be close to the people I love. I don't like to be alone. A couple hours of alone time every once in a while is just fine with me. I got married young because that was what I wanted. Part of me always knew that being me meant being part of a we. (That is so cheesy I am laughing at myself) But that's part of me. It is a strength and a weakness but that's ok. I'm learning the balance.
I am blessed to be married to a man that loves me for me, and he helps me understand when I'm not quite sure I understand myself.

Every experience in life gives us the opportunity to find more of ourselves. To choose what we believe, what is important to us, and how we are going to respond. How we choose to respond is what makes us who we are today. We don't have to go anywhere for that.
(Don't get me wrong, I am so planning a trip around the world still)

Wow. I was updating my condo blog and I realized I have not written anything on this one since January! Course pretty much anything there is to say is on the condo blog because that has been pretty much the only thing happening in our life, other than Aaron working A LOT!

We did just get back from Washington where we attended the 2010 Knepper Family Reunion. That is my family on my mom's side. We had almost the whole family tree there...my Grandma & Grandpa, 2 aunts & spouses, 6 cousins, my parents, 3 siblings and spouses/girlfriend, and 9 nieces and nephews. Whew! It was a full house. We had so much fun though and when it was over I wished it wasn't. I have an amazing family that is warm, loving, accepting of everyone and loves to eat! My Grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary while we were all together and my parents had their 40th this year. What a legacy. I am so blessed to have their examples to follow-for those that don't have that, its ok- you can borrow mine ;0)

Designer for the Stars! LOL!

The other day at work this girl (lady) comes into the store that looks sooo familiar…I thought that maybe I had helped her before in the store. I was busy with a customer so Patricia my Co-worker helped her and her friend. After awhile Patricia flags me down and says –“They need someone to come to their house and help them place some things. Can you go tonight?”

I was like umm, I’m busy.

And she says “Then tomorrow morning. You can do it tomorrow morning.”

I didn’t know what to say. I haven’t gone to anyone’s home before to help do that. I wasn’t sure if it was okay or not…Nothing like putting me on the spot. And I was trying to help someone else! So I said “okay”

When she left the store I find out who she is- Leslie Mann! From Knocked Up, 40 year old Virgin, etc…LOL! No wonder she looked so familiar! Anyway, Laura (our buyer) and I ended up going to her house that night (I cancelled my plans) to help her decide which pieces she should buy and where she should put them.

We looked at all the things she wanted to get rid of, and the photos of the things she liked in the store and talked about which would look good where. We probably spent a couple hours there that night.

The next day, I got to go on the delivery to her house! We took the things we had talked about and some other things too. We spent a couple hours moving things around- trying this here, and that there. Then the rug people came too and I gave my opinion on which looked good. (I couldn’t help it) It was soooo fun! We brought lamps and some accessories and tried those out too. She has a beautiful condo that has full ocean views. We furnished all 3 bedrooms and some neat pieces in the living room too.

Leslie and her assistant Stacy are super sweet!! We had a great time working with them. Leslie is very relaxed and casual, and very open to all our ideas. She was really grateful for how helpful everyone had been at our store and others. And she loved my dress J

So after moving around all that stuff the delivery guys went home and Leslie says “There is this really cute shop at the resort. Let’s go look and get some wine!” So, of course we said yes. J

We went and browsed around and went to dinner, had some wine. It was so fun! It is easy to forget that she is famous. She asked about our lives and the lifestyle here in Hawaii and whatever. It wasn’t awkward at all, it was great. I didn’t end up getting home till like 9:30!

Doing this sort of thing is definitely one of my favorite activities. Being able to help a great person who is also a celebrity just topped it off. It was a super awesome couple days!

Happy New Year!

Yay! 2010 is here! I feel excited this time about starting a new year. This past year has been so full that I feel ready to continue on into the future, not wishing I had gotten more done the way I have felt before.

I know for a lot of people 2009 was a really hard year. For us, it was 2008. We kinda started the recession early, with Aaron as a full time student and me in a low paying job, it was really tough. We ended 2008 not knowing what the future would hold. Aaron was finished school but had no job, and we were barely holding on.  2009 was an awesome year of faith, growth and blessings for us. But it started out a bit scary. In January we packed everything up, I quit my job and we moved back to Washington so Aaron could work at his old job until a helicopter position opened up. Most of you know the story... a couple weeks after we got to Washington, we got the call that he got the job! A few weeks later we packed up again and headed back to Hawaii. He started his job as a helicopter instructor in April. I was able to get a job pretty quickly, and it is a great one! A few months later we both got raises. Then Aaron was offered the job as Assistant Chief Pilot for the school. It took some time for the qualifications to catch up, but now he is officially the Assistant Chief with a pay upgrade! At the beginning of the year we had to move out of our apartment and in with our parents. Now we are in process of buying a condo! Last January I hated my job and wasn't doing anything I loved. Now I have started interior design training, and got to do a photo shoot!  The list goes on.

My faith has been stretched and stretched and stretched some more the last couple years. It felt like some things were impossible and unreachable and yet here we are now, still breathing, still living and living abundantly. I'm grateful for what we have been through because I am so aware of each blessing that comes my way. We have been so blessed this year it is amazing!!

I know that 2010 is going to be a continuation of the goodness we have experienced in 2009, and I believe that it is going to be beginning (or continuation) for everyone else as well! So happy New Year!

Tis the Season

Its been a little while since I shared my thoughts with you. I don’t have internet at home, so that makes it a bit tricky.

I have had so many ups and downs in the last month or so. The “trying of my faith” I guess.

It started on an up, I read this book by Napoleon Hill at little bit ago called ‘Think & Grow Rich’- a good title for a good book. My boss’s wife Jan told me it changed her life, so I thought that was too good to pass up! I definitely recommend it. I‘m on my way through it for the second time with the ‘action pack’ that I discovered once I got to the end of the book :) The book talks about the power of thought and declaration and making your desires your reality. It is really awesome!

But you know how you can get all pumped up when you read a good book or hear a good message?- you feel like you can overcome anything (which we can) but then reality hits and you forget all that good stuff and get wrapped up in what you see around you. At least that’s how it has been for me. The last few weeks I have been stressing and worrying and trying really hard not to do either of those things. Finally, the moment came when I was able to say to myself (and mean it) “There is nothing I can do but wait, so I am going to enjoy myself in the meantime.” I decided not to put Christmas on hold just because we are maybe moving maybe not, or because we are leaving on Christmas Eve, or because it is more practical to not spend money on a tree. I am celebrating Christmas! This is the first year in Hawaii that Christmas feels like Christmas. There is that lilt in the air that makes everything seem suspenseful and fun, the weather is cooler (it helps that I work in AC), and I get to look forward to family and friends. I decorated at work, decorated at church, decorated at home! There are Christmas parties to go to and plays to perform, and presents to buy!

It comes down to truly trusting that God always has my best interest at heart, and His timing is better than mine, and don’t sweat the small stuff. I am shifting my thoughts to what I can control rather than what I can’t, and I’m enjoying myself along the way.
